  • What is a Google penalty?

A Google penalty is a sanction against your website that may lower your page rank for targeted keywords or delist your site altogether. The punishment makes it significantly harder for visitors to find your website. As a result, you will generate less traffic and likely less revenue.

Google will only penalize websites if they believe the site has blatantly attempted to manipulate the system. In its eyes, a rogue site is providing an unhelpful or substandard customer experience and Google wants its algorithm to steer people clear of the harmful product.

One of the easiest ways to get a Google Penalty is by keyword stuffing. If a donut shop in Bondi uses the “donut shop in Bondi” keyword fifty times on a single page, Google would consider that egregious and worthy of a penalty.

Other malfeasance includes irrelevant keywords, deceptive redirects, cloaking, hidden texts or links and spyware or low quality link building campaigns.

  • What are the different Google penalty types?

Google penalizes any website that attempts to manipulate its rules for personal gain. Examples of penalty-worthy behavior can include but are not limited to cloaking, spyware, malware, spam, low quality link building and keyword stuffing. The penalties come in two forms: algorithmic and manual penalties.

Google automatically enacts an algorithmic penalty when a website broaches the Google algorithm. The company knows to do this, thanks to algorithms like Google Panda Update and Good Penguin Update, which filter content based on proscribed core metrics and check websites for specific properties. Violators will see a drastic drop in their search-engine results.

A manual penalty requires action by a Google employee. They may be part of the Search Quality or Webspam Team and can take action against a website. These penalties usually last about 30 days.

  • How do I remove a penalty from Google?

Removing a Google penalty depends entirely on the nature of the offense. Regardless of the reason, though, you should aim to correct the issue as soon as possible to restore your page rank, traffic, and revenue streams.

Here are a couple of violations and their solutions:

    • Keyword Stuffing: Look for hidden text or excessive keywords in your cascading style sheets, or CSS styling. Remove any unnecessary text, including deleting words or phrases that have no context.
    • Image Cloaking: Show the image to Google that users see on your site.
    • Redirects: Compare pages on your website to what Google sees, using Google Search Console. Correct any discrepancies between the two and check for any unexpected redirects.
    • Spam: Consult with Google’s Webmaster Guidelines.
    • Unnatural Links: Download a list of site links with Google Search Console. Identify any that might merit a penalty. You can delete them or add rel=”nofollow”.
  • How do I know if my site is penalised by Google?

Google penalties are a form of punishment against websites whose marketing practices conflict with Google’s guidelines. The goal is to curb self-serving techniques by limiting traffic to the offending website, lowering page ranks, and even delisting it. Generally speaking, there are two ways to find out if your site received a penalty.

The first way is to check the Google Search Console. This platform is Google’s center for communicating with webmasters and will let you know if there are any potential problems. In this case, penalties may be manual or algorithmic.

The second way is to check the analytics and review the data on your website traffic. This method is the easier of the two, as a straight-line drop in traffic will signal a penalty. If you do receive a punishment of this nature, the odds are that Google released a new algorithm recently and your site went from legit to illegitimate in the process.
